J. Fernando Arevalo, a holder of MD, and PhD degrees, completed his medical and ophthalmology training in Caracas, Venezuela (his native country), before traveling to Bogota, Colombia for a two-year Retina and Vitreous fellowship. After this intensive training, he traveled to the USA for a 2-year Retina and Vitreous/Uveitis and Intraocular Inflammation fellowship at UCSD. The following year, Dr. Arevalo went to Philadelphia for an Ocular Oncology fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital. Dr. Arevalo was invited by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to work as a Professor of Ophthalmology and the Chief of the Retina Division of the King Khaled Eye Hospital (KKESH) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for a four-year tenure, followed by an appointment at the Wilmer Eye Institute as the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Professor of Ophthalmology in the Retina Division, and an appointment as chief of ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in 2015. As a clinical scientist, Dr. Arevalo has more than 900 scientific publications, 17 books, and more than 1300 invited lecture presentations that have led to international recognition and awards. Dr. Arevalo is a former President of the Pan-American Retina and Vitreous Society (2006-2008), and Past-President (2017-2019) of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology. Dr. Arevalo is the current chairman of the Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation.

Budenz, MD, MPH, is currently the Kittner Distinguished Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA and Past President of the American Glaucoma Society. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, USA and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, Scheie Eye Institute, USA. Dr Budenz then completed a Heed Foundation Fellowship in glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, USA, where he subsequently was a faculty member for 17 years. In 2004, he received a Masters in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr Budenz is an editorial reviewer for numerous medical journals, is on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Glaucoma, as well as serving as the Editor of the Glaucoma issue of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology. He has been principal investigator in numerous glaucoma clinical trials. Concurrent with his research, Dr Budenz has published widely in the field of glaucoma; he has authored two textbooks, Atlas of Visual Fields and Atlas of Optical Coherence Tomography for Glaucoma, contributed numerous chapters to other books, and written or coauthored over 250 peer-reviewed journal articles. Harry W. Flynn Jr., M.D is the J. Donald M. Gass Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. He is Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and specializes in medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous. Bachelor of Science Degree received from Wake Forest University and his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Virginia (UVA), School of Medicine. Dr. Flynn completed two years of active duty in the US Army at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He joined the faculty at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1978.
Dr. Flynn has been author or co-author of more than 700 peer-reviewed publications as well as 120 book chapters. He has edited or co-edited 7 books including 1) Diabetes and Ocular Diseases: Past, Current, and Future Therapies (2010) 2) Vitreoretinal Disease: The Essentials (2018) 3) Endophthalmitis in Clinical Practice (2018). Dr. Flynn had held numerous leadership positions including President: The Vitreous Society (now ASRS) (1992-1993), President: The Miami Ophthalmological Society (1999) and President: The Retina Society (2002-2003). Dr. Flynn has served as Senior Editor for Section 12 (Retina) of the Basic and Clinical Science Course for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He has also served as Director and Co-Director of the Retina Subspecialty Day for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He serves on the Editorial Board of numerous journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, RETINA, OSLI: RETINA, and others. He has served on the Data and Safety Monitoring Committees for DRCR Network since 2002.
He received the AAO “Life Achievement Honor Award” in 2008. Dr. Flynn received the Shaler Richardson, M.D “Service to Medicine Award” from the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He received the “Hermann Wacker Award” from the Club Jules Gonin in 2012. He has delivered 37 named lectures including the “J. Donald M. Gass Lecture” at the Retina Society in 2012.
